Nutritional Guidelines for Plant-Based Meat Alternatives

August 2026
The Alternative Proteins Association is pleased to share the pre-print of our new paper, Nutritional Guidelines for Plant-Based Meat Alternatives. While the paper is currently undergoing peer review, we are making the pre-print available to encourage early engagement with this important work.
Please view the pre-print here.
The paper proposes the first evidence-based voluntary nutritional guidelines for plant-based meat alternatives, bringing together current scientific evidence and established UK and EU public health and regulatory benchmarks. By aligning the sector around a consistent nutritional standard, these guidelines aim to give policymakers, health professionals and consumers greater confidence that well-formulated plant-based meat alternatives can support healthy, sustainable dietary transitions. They also provide manufacturers with a practical framework for product development and nutritional improvement.
To accompany the pre-print, we are hosting a webinar on 1 October 2026 exploring the evidence behind the guidelines and their implications for the sector. Researchers, nutrition experts and industry representatives will discuss the science underpinning the recommendations, the nutritional strengths and variability of plant-based and mycoprotein products, and how greater alignment on nutritional standards can support innovation, strengthen policymaker confidence, and accelerate the adoption of healthier, more sustainable protein choices. The session will conclude with a live Q&A, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the authors and speakers.
